Sleepless in Singapore

Last month I was invited to the Marie Digby showcase over at Zouk Velvet thanks to our friends over at Teenage Magazine and EMI Singapore. It has been a while since I was in a club and looking at the throngs of people who are dressed immaculately and were actually queuing up to get in, reminded me why I am not much of a clubber. Fortunately we were all in the VIP List and managed to bypass the queue and the heat and we had a whole section in the club to ourselves.

The showcase wasn’t much to shout about. Marie Digby is pretty hot but after she sang her cover version of the Rihanna’s hit “Umbrella”; I think part of the crowd became nonchalant.

After the showcase, some of us stayed on for awhile before we were subtly shooed away by one of the service crew who told us that the table we were sitting is “reserved” and we have to leave once the guests arrive. At that point I don’t know whether to feel offended or relieved because as much as the company was great, I really wanted to go home but it seems that the rest had other plan. So in the space of 3 hours, not only did I went to Zouk Singapore, I managed to squeeze myself across a room that was maybe meant for 100 people but I felt there were millions of them around me over at Butter Factory.

The funny thing is that whenever you are in a club and indulged in “people watching” you will definitely find those characters that amuses you.

For example, I was watching these pair of girls dancing right in front of me and out of nowhere suddenly a guy came up behind them and starts to “grind” away. The girl put up a brave front, ignored the guy and continued to dance but eventually they went away after sometime and magically the guy disappeared as well.

A few moments later, the girl came back with a drink on their hands and resumed dancing, all was well and fine until the guy came back again and started to do his “moves”. It was rather hilarious looking at his feeble attempts to get physical with the girls with his rather outdated and a tad bit vulgar dance moves but I applaud his courage and enthusiasm because if it were me, I don’t think I would be “brave” enough to go near those girls nor dance those moves.

So in light of my new found enthusiasm of the night scene, the month of June will be dedicated to all you nocturnal creatures out there here at Itchytraveller.com.
Starting with the club scene in Singapore, we explore the enigma that is Zouk and MOS and peel the layers of these signature clubs to try and make sense of their headiness.

So stay tuned to more nightlife guides all across Asia here at Itchytraveller.com during the month of June.
