I’ll be coming down to Singapore this September to catch the first ever F1 night race. I’ll be here for a week and was wondering what other stuff I can catch or happenings I can check out while I’m in town?
Gyasi (Cairo, Egypt)
There are loads of things that you are able to do while in Singapore during that period of time and since you are from Egypt, you could take this opportunity to experience Ramadhan in an Asian perspective; a Singapore’s style. Go down to either Geylang or Arab Street to bask in the Ramadhan festivities of their evening and night bazaars and also the Eid’s light-up along the streets that can be found.
I’ve been hearing a lot of news about political unrest in Thailand. Would it be advisable for me to plan a trip there sometime this year and if yes, which area would you recommend that is not as affected an area as Bangkok.
Ravi (Malaysia)
Now this is a rather tricky question Ravi because despite the past unrest that have already happened in Thailand, the country still records a high growth in the number of visitors to Thailand. Would I be going to Thailand anytime soon? Then my answer would be no. I definitely stay away for awhile; maybe give it another 3 months or so for thing to die down and from there you can have abetter gauge on how safe, predictable and convenient for you to travel to Thailand.
I am currently in my last year of college and would like to take a graduation trip with some friends after we finish school and before being sucked into the corporate world. My ideal adventure would be to travel from Singapore to Russia by land. How viable do you think this trip is and what are some of the things I should be taking note of should I decide to pursue on this course. Any tips and recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Annette James (Singapore)
Annette, what you are planning to do is something I have yet to come across from any Singaporean. It is one of the most exhilarating and fantastic route to undertake but yet it poses its unique dangers and threats.
Basically what you need to do is to travel by land all the way from Singapore to Beijing, China where you will then board the Trans-Manchurian Railway.
There are a few guidebooks that will help you plan ahead and the most essential components to this particular trip is to have loads of spare time and money as well as patience and the ability to stare at nothingness for a long period of time and if you are travelling with some friends make sure you can get along with them.
Being stuck in a small compartment for weeks (if you decided to take the long route) can have its toll even to the best of relationships.
Another thing I would like to advise is to get your visas for all the countries you will be passing in advance and not chance it upon destination. You will get even more frazzled when you don’t speak the local language and people might just ignore you or worse detain you for travelling into their country illegally.
