Koh Tao

Koh Tao is an island north of Koh Phangan and it is the next stop of our journey.

Just over 21km square, Koh Tao, also located in the Gulf of Thailand (together with Koh Samui and Koh Phangan) translates to Turtle Island because the waters previously had been rich with sea turtles – most of which have been relocated to other breeding grounds.

Koh Tao has a colourful history – from little more than a political island prison in 1933, it has transformed gradually to a thriving paradise destination among the back-packers network. Word of the island’s beautiful marine life and coral reefs spread and became the pull factor for deep sea divers and paradise seekers alike.

A point to note here, unlike Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, Koh Tao is smaller and less developed compared to those two islands. So your experience here can be rather limiting but make no mistake about it, Koh Tao definitely offers the same kind of natural beauty and wonderment as its bigger compatriots.

From Koh Phangan, the journey to Koh Tao by boat would take approximately an hour. As we have mentioned due to the size of the island, the choices of accommodation in Koh Tao can be rather limiting so an alternative is to stay in Koh Phangan and make a day trip to Koh Tao instead but there are still available choices of accommodation for every travellers in Koh Tao.
