Donut Culture

Donuts seem to be the new food du jour around town these days. What with all the shops mushrooming all around Singapore. So how do you, the discerning foodie choose the best that this donut craze has to offer?
That is where we come in. We have scouted the island, and found the best places to get your doughnut fix, whatever that might be.

First up, Donut Factory, the one that started this whole frenzy. The lines at their Raffles City outlet had shortened, so I decided to check what the fuss was all about. I bought the Espresso Mousse and Double Chocolate. They all looked really good.

The donut was once again, really soft and light. The dark chocolate was rich but not cloying and the espresso mousse centre had the right consistency and the full bodied flavour of a nice cuppa. A definite hit for coffee lovers and non-coffee lovers alike.

Taste Test: Double Chocolate (rich dark chocolate filled donut covered with white chocolate)
Well, Donut Factory really outdid itself with this one. The sweetness of the white chocolate complemented brilliantly with the bittersweet dark chocolate that oozed out on the first bite. Mmmm, just thinking about it is making me drool. An absolute must for all you chocolate lovers!

So, is Donut Factory worth all that hype…You Bet!
Donuts start from $1.30 a piece to around $3.00 for their signature drinks
Donut Factory has outlets at Raffles City Basement, Velocity@Novena Square and Suntec City Tower 3.

Their flagship store is at Raffles City basement and comprises a sit down café area as well as a drinks and dessert takeaway counter. However it was their donuts that was the star attraction.

Taste Test: Their signature donut, Alcapone (white Belgian chocolate topped with crunchy Californian almonds on a ring donut)
I really enjoyed this donut, the dough was soft and light and the white chocolate was not too sweet. The almonds on the donut could have been crunchier but overall it still tasted yummy!

Taste Test: Miss Green T (macha green tea chocolate icing with white chocolate stripes on a ring donut)
This donut was something different. The green tea icing was sweet and yet has that distinctive bitter aftertaste associated with green tea. Might not appeal to everyone though.
A box of 6 costs $7.00
J.Co Donuts and Coffee is located at Raffles City basement.

Donut House
This lesser known donut eatery has been round for about a year and catches your eye with its bright pink and green décor. It has an alfresco concept and is a great place to have Sunday brunch or tea.
I ordered a set of 6 donuts that comprised of ulu pandan and strawberry shell amongst others.

What struck me first was how different the donut was from the other 2 places. The donut here was more substantial and felt heavier in my mouth and stomach. The pandan icing/chocolate was not too sweet or overwhelming yet it retained that delightful aroma of pandan leaves. I however did not take to it too much but it would appeal to those who love their pandan cake.

Taste Test: Strawberry Shell (strawberry filled donut)
I really liked this donut, the strawberry filling was really generous and it tasted really fresh and had the right amount of sweetness. A true blue classic.

A box of 6 costs $7.50
Donut House is located at Crown Centre on Bukit Timah Rd.

Another big player in the donut scene with 6 outlets and still expanding. It is little wonder as their donuts are really good!
I ordered a dozen to share with my family and well they polished off every single one that evening itself.

Taste Test: Silly Mon (white chocolate with a sprinkling of cinnamon not uniformly on the sides; hence the “silly”-ness)
My absolute favourite so far. The white chocolate was warm and rich and the hint of cinnamon was the perfect accompaniment to an absolutely soft and fluffy donut. 2 thumbs up!

Taste Test: Chocz O’Nutter (dark chocolate covered donut with a creamy peanut butter filling) Yummy Yum Yum! The best peanut butter donut so far. Dripping warm dark chocolate and creamy peanut butter, no better combination if you ask me or every other member of my family. A definite hit!

A box of 12 cost $13.00 (for varied doughnuts)
Munchy Donut is located at 226 Tanjong Katong Rd and Cold Storages at Causeway Point, Eastwood and United Square.

So whatever your donut craving might be, you are definitely spoilt for choice. So go on, experiment and find the perfect donut for you!
