Going to "Swirl"

Desserts are probably my most favourite part of any meal. In fact it can be a meal on it’s own as I was to learn last weekend when I stumbled upon this excellent café called Swirl.
Armed with a camera and an empty stomach, I trudged along Bukit Timah Road, having heard about the many great places to eat in the area.

Located at Crown Center, this humble little establishment caught my eye with its bright colours and promise of great gelato.

Never before seen flavours such as ‘peanut butter swirl’, ‘mascarpone’ and ‘Jamaican banana’, caught my eye and I couldn’t wait to start tasting. And taste I did because at Swirl, you can taste as many flavours as you want before you actually order.

Upon the owner’s recommendation, I finally settled on a gelato sampler of six flavours served in shot glasses, a gelato-shot and their famous black cow. The flavours I chose were peanut butter swirl, mascarpone, mango sherbet, rooibos, chocolate and brazillian coffee. Honestly, they were all yummy but the peanut butter swirl deserves special mention. It was the best peanut butter dessert that I have ever had, the taste of peanut butter was just sweet enough and that chocolate swirl gave it that extra oomph. All their gelato is made fresh daily, so quality is never compromised and did I mention that they use only fresh ingredients. I mean if that doesn’t say premium gelato, then nothing does.

The gelo-shot was just as great, mine was served with soursop sorbet and the taste of the gelo
swirl2_222591945.jpg complemented well with the freshness of the sorbet, even my sister who is not a fan of soursop, loved it! While waiting for the final masterpiece (black glutinous rice with a serving of coconut gelato), my sisters and I engaged in a game of Boggle, one of the many boardgames available here at Swirl.

The Black Cow arrived stylishly in a martini glass and it tasted amazing. The warm ‘pulut hitam’ went well with the cool and light coconut gelato. It really was a comforting dessert that just melts in your mouth.

Another specialty of Swirl that I unfortunately did not get a chance to sample, is their gelato mixed on a cold slab. So you can basically pick any flavour of gelato and toppings of your choice and the friendly staff of Swirl will mix it up for you. So go on and give in to that urge to create!

All in all, I enjoyed my sojourn to Swirl immensely and I would recommend everyone to go and check it out as it’s a great place for hanging out with family and friends. I know that I’ll be back really soon.

Swirl is located at 557 Bukit Timah Road, Crown Centre, #01-04/05.
