The National Museum Cinematheque is an ongoing event held at the Gallery Theatre of the National Museum. It focuses on the presentation of film in its historical, aesthetic and cultural contexts. It allows film buffs to come together on the 2nd Tuesday of every month to catch some of these classic films that presents some of the most influential directors of their time.

Come this 11th of March, Cinematheque brings to you ‘Jiok Hwa’ (A Flower in Hell) a 1958 Korean film, directed by legendary Korean auteur Shin Sang-Ok. A Flower in Hell is a gritty document of the lives of black marketers and prostitutes set around an American military base in 1950s Seoul. The film’s mix of documentary footage and the use of real locations offer a candid look at the devastation and moral downfall of postwar Korea. The film pulls the audience in with it’s gritty narrative and poignant acting by acclaimed actress Choi Eun-Hee who coincidentally is director Sang-ok’s wife. This is a film that stands the test of time and culture and is a must see for any film buff.

This film is part of the World Cinema Series that bring in works from the new-wave film movements around the world and covers significant as well as less discovered territories of cinema. So whether you are a newbie to the film scene or a hard core film buff, you definitely would not want to miss out on the Cinematheque events that the National Museum of Singapore holds throughout the year. The film starts at 7.30 p.m. and will be shown in the Gallery Theatre which seats 247. Tickets costs $8 while concession tickets go for $6.40. Admission is free for Singapore Film Society members.
