A recap on our very first community project in 2008

When we first stared out the website all of us had a clear vision on the objectives of it, one of which is to use the website as a platform to initiate community involvements projects. We duly call it our Project Teach to Fish; as we wanted to concentrate on educational developments of underprivileged children in the region.

Being only 3 months old, we decided to start with a small project which would enable us to learn from the experience and hopefully provide us with the necessary experience in executing future projects and with the help of our event sponsor; Karma Resorts as well as donors and members of Itchytravellers.com, we managed to organize an educational field trip for the young residents of the Pertapis Children Home.

The educational field trip took place on the 19th of April where 23 children and some members of Itchytravellers.com volunteered to help out during the trip. The children were brought to spend a day over at Snow City, the Science Center as well as the Omni Max Theatre.

Most of these children had never been overseas to experience the winter climate and they were excited at the prospect of being able to don winter clothing and play around the snow compound. At temperature of -5 degrees, some of them found the whole experience to be rather too overwhelming but most were pretty excited to partake in the “Winter Olympics” that we have already lined up for them.

Next the children proceeded to the Science Center where for the next 90 minutes or so were spent exploring the entire complex with the help of our volunteers. Both the children and our volunteers managed to spend quality time together while previewing the exhibits that were found there.

After the lengthy tour of the Science Center, all of us gathered the children at the open amphitheater and took a short break of McDonalds’ Happy Meals before our next item in the itinerary.

The last activity of the day is a documentary screening over at the Omni Max Theater where the children were exposed to the world of dinosaurs and the research that was done in discovering, researching and archiving them.

It was very interesting to see the way the children’s faces lighted up as we went about the
planned activities for the day. Their reactions of pure, unadulterated delight shone through the thickest of jackets. It made us realize that to really enjoy traveling; we should always go into it with the cloudless and innocent eyes of children.

Unfortunately the day had to come to an end but before that we had a final surprise for the children where we managed to treat them to a special dinner of pizzas.

So at the end of day, even though we were all rather tired, we left with new eyes and lighter hearts. And also with new ideas for our next project for which we sincerely hope that you will be able to join us.
